Bus drivers continue to strike across the country

Drivers from MyCiti in Cape Town, and Rea Vaya in Johannesburg are currently striking.

9 February 2015 · Staff Writer

Drivers from MyCiti in Cape Town, and Rea Vaya in Johannesburg are currently striking. This has led to disruptions in certain travel routes, and customers struggling to get to their destinations.

The MyCiti bus strike – which started last week - is set to continue today, as reported by the bus service.

Last week the City of Cape Town was informed that the strike by bus drivers who are employed by the Transpeninsula Investments vehicle operating company (VOC) would cause disruptions across popular routes.

However, in order to minimise the impact, it was requested that other two VOCs – TBRT and Kidrogen – assist with the services on the routes affected.

MyCiti said this morning that there would be buses on all routes, though some delays were to still be expected.

City Officials have received a briefing from Piotrans and Ditsamaiso management, who employ the Rea Vaya bus drivers, on the bus driver crisis and their proposed response, said Rea Vaya in a statement.

"In respect of the bus operating company's Board of Directors decision, the City confirms that Rea Vaya services will not resume on Monday 9 February 2015," said Rea Vaya.

Furthermore, Johannesburg is also talking to Absa about the process to refund passengers who have loaded funds into their smartcards and will revert soonest.

"As a result of the disruption of Rea Vaya services, the City apologises to passengers for the inconvenience caused and advises passengers to use alternative transport," said the city of Johannesburg.
