From 1 July FNB customers who use the bank’s banking app will no longer need data in order to access the app via their smartphones. FNB revealed that this follows an agreement with South Africa’s major mobile network operators to zero rate access to the FNB Banking App, meaning that customers can now access the app at no cost. The app was already accessible for free to FNB Connect customers.
“Since launching the app six years ago, not only has it become the most downloaded, but also the popular banking app amongst consumers as recently rated in the SAcsi and Columinate SITEisfaction Index’s 2017,” noted Giuseppe Virgillito, FNB Digital spokesperson.
According to Virgillito, FNB believes that its customers should not be blocked from accessing its banking app due to a lack of data or airtime. “The zero rating of the app is in line with our broader strategy to migrate customers to digital and electronic channels where a number of transactions and services are already offered free of charge.”
The App
The FNB app allows customers to complete a number of tasks, from payments and inter-account transfers, to opening a savings account through the app. “We attribute the success of the banking app to continuous innovation and meeting more than the basic banking needs of our customers,” noted Virgillito.
The app also offers a number of features aimed at increasing customer security. This includes FNB’s inContact, which informs customers via the app whenever a transaction is made regardless of the value of the transaction for free. According to FNB, this reduces the risk of fraud, as standard SMS and email messages could be intercepted by fraudsters.
In addition to the above, the app also provides information on where to find the nearest ATM or FNB branch, and allows users to purchase airtime and prepaid electricity. Coupons are also available on the app for use at partner stores, such as Checkers, Shoprite and Dischem.
