Fuel stations deny ‘running dry’ rumours

As we head into day two of the petroleum producing sector strike, The South African Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia) has reassured motorists that fuel stations won’t be running dry any time soon.

Despite recent warnings that motorists should fill up their tanks, at least four of the major filling stations have reportedly said that the strike at the refineries will not affect their fuel supply.

Unions wield a lot of power in South Africa and the Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) is demanding a 9 % pay increase after refusing the offered increase of 6.5%.

Though fears have been calmed for now, organisations like the Automobile Authority (AA) have advised motorists to still take caution and top up their tanks as regularly and reasonably as possible.

In addition they provided a few tips on safe and smart fuel consumption:

-“Motorists should avoid taking unnecessary journeys, as well as stop-start driving to reduce fuel use,” added the AA.

-It is advisable to regulate your air conditioner usage more wisely as driving with one on as well as speeding and driving in peak hour traffic consumes more fuel. “We therefore advise motorists to adjust their driving patterns as far as possible to ensure that the fuel in their tanks lasts that bit longer,” the AA noted.

The personal navigation system for vehicles, TomTom, also weighed in, as they advised motorists to “Avoid peak hour, arrange that your working hours are amended for the duration of the strike. Don’t make unnecessary trips. Know where you’re going before departure to ensure your travels are efficient and within the expected kilometres and plan and execute accordingly.”

“It is unclear how long this industrial action will last, but motorists should monitor media, and social media reports, for updates,” added the AA.

Handy tip: Make sure you and your vehicle are well taken care of by applying for vehicle insurance, here.
