Four preventative tips
King Price’s spokesperson, Wynand van Vuuren, notes that you can lower your risk by following these four tips.
1. Install a tracking device
Installing a tracker on your car allows you to see its location and the distance it’s travelled. Some trackers have locking systems which can prevent a thief from using the features in your car, or even lock the thief inside, making it easier for police to find and arrest them.
2. Ensure that you park in a secure place
Park your car in a locked garage or behind a locked gate wherever possible, and avoid parking in open areas that you’re not familiar with.
Avoid driving in high theft-risk areas and red zones for hijackings.
3. Check your car is locked and don’t lose your keys
It’s important to physically check that your car doors are locked as thieves can jam your central locking using a remote device. They’ll wait until you’re out of sight before they drive away with your car.
4. Hide your valuables
Don’t leave your valuables on your car seat where it will attract the attention of criminals. Put it inside the boot and always close your windows.
What should you do if your car gets stolen?
Contact the South African Police Service
The sooner you call the police the better. If you call immediately and ensure that the vehicle is circulated as stolen, you increase the chances of your car being recovered. The police report will also come in handy when you submit your claim to your insurance company.
Ensure you provide the police with the licence plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), model, and colour of your car.
Phone the tracking company as soon as possible
The tracking company will help you locate your car and lock it. Tracking companies have recovery teams who can help you find your car within an hour. Some use helicopters to search for your vehicle.
Call your insurance company
If you’re properly insured, the insurance company will put you in the same position you were in prior to the loss, meaning that your car will be replaced. Don’t take the risk of not being insured and ending up without a vehicle.
