SARS to have advisory committee

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene announced that he will be appointing an advisory committee for the South African Revenue Services (SARS).
 
The committee will be chaired by retired Judge Frank Kroon.
 
"Judge Kroon's appointment has been made after consultation with the Minster of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha," said Nene.
 
This was announced last week at the budget speech.
 
Committee's task
 
The primary task of the advisory committee is to direct the long-term strategy of SARS.
 
This will be done by ensuring that decisions about the revenue and customs authority's operations, personnel, budget and technology support its long-term strategy.
 
The committee will also advise Nene on business plans, modernisation of technology systems, and budget.
 
SARS and the media
 
The committee will also review the events which have been reported on by the media, such as the suspension of key SARS members.
 
"I would like to inform South Africans that there are processes underway to bring about closure on this matter as soon and as amicably as possible," said Nene.
 
Nene went on to say SARS and all the relevant parties concerned need time in order to complete these processes, and "thus bring an end to this difficult chapter in the history of our most important fiscal institution."
