Toyota SA confirms recall

Toyota is in the process of recalling 1.43 million vehicles for defective Takata airbags and another 2.87 million vehicles for defective fuel emissions controls. Toyota South Africa said that South African vehicles are among those affected.

"A recall campaign on the Lexus CT 200h and Toyota Prius models has been implemented by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC),” stated Toyota SA.

The company further reportedly highlighted that, “261 Lexus vehicles produced between 2010 and 2012 as well as 270 Prius vehicles produced between 2008 and 2012, which are affected by both recalls.”

“It has been observed that the inflator could separate and enter the cabin when a vehicle is parked and unoccupied for long periods. If this occurs while the vehicle is occupied, it could increase the risk of injury. There are no reports of incidents linking the above to any injuries or fatalities,” explained Toyota SA.

The Automobile Association (AA) similarly attempted to dispel fears by adding, “Our first message to all motorists in vehicles fitted with these air bags is not to panic but to nonetheless take the safety recall very seriously. Millions of cars around the world have been fitted with Takata air bags, and manufacturers are recalling these vehicles to replace the defective parts.”

Furthermore the emissions control units in models produced from 2006 to 2015 in Prius, Auris compact hatchback and Corolla were also recalled as they were reportedly prone to cracks, which could lead to fuel leaks over time.

Affected owners will be notified by their respective dealerships to bring their vehicle in for the necessary servicing.

“Please note that the replacement of the component will take one to two hours at no cost of the owner,” added Toyota SA.

Customers can further reference whether or not their vehicle has been affected by logging onto the website and entering their VIN number into an automated form.

Alternatively vehicle owners can contact the Toyota Call Centre on 0800 139 111.

“Ensure you have your vehicle’s VIN number on hand (the VIN number is recorded on your licence disc),” advised Toyota SA.

“Do not wait, this is your safety, be proactive. We trust all owners will receive expert guidance if they contact the manufacturers directly,” the AA concluded.
