No matter the season, occasion or outfit, a suitable red lipstick is the perfect finishing touch. But with so many to choose from, which ones are worth buying? And which offer value for money?
We list 5 options for you to try:
1.Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipstick:
Pros: This strawberry-scented lipstick is easily applied and has a wand for a quick touch-up.
Cons: The lip formula can be sticky when applied and needs multiple coats to achieve even coverage.
Overall impression: It’s a deep shade of red, but may not be entirely user friendly as it tends to smudge easily.
Price: R179
2. Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink:
Pros: If you’re looking for a good buy, this vanilla-scented lipstick lasts an entire day without the need for a touch-up. It also has a 3D wand applicator for a more accurate application.
Cons: Because of its paste-like consistency it tends to stain clothing easily and if you’re not using an oil-based make-up remover, could be tricky to remove.
Overall impression: It is bold and pigmented like few red lipsticks are and makes for a beautiful even finish on the lips. It also photographs well. Ideal for a night out on the town.
Price: R159
3. Yardley Intense Matte lipstick:
Pros: This product subscribes to the traditional lipstick packaging but that’s where the traditionalism ends. This lipstick is moisturising and has an added shine, but once it settles on the lips it mattifies. It was also easier to remove than the others.
Cons: It requires multiple coats to obtain an even shade.
Overall impression: While you may need to use more lipstick, the finish is worth it. It’s rare for matte lipsticks to also have a moisturising factor, but this one gives you the desired finish without drying out your lips.
Price: R109.95
4. Wet and Wild:
Pros: Smooth is possibly the best way to describe this lipstick as it simply glides onto your lips. It also comes in petite packaging that means even your smallest clutch could host it.
Cons: Because of its relatively small size, it’s harder to handle and does need multiple coats to cover your lips. It also presents with a more orange undertone than a deep red. Also, this lipstick creates a build-up on your lips after touch-ups and tends to then appear clumpy in areas.
Overall impression: It’s a good option if you’re an occasional red lipstick wearer or if you’re simply running errands and want something to pull your look together.
Price: R 52.95
5. Essence Ultra Last lipstick:
Pros: The consistency and moisture in this lipstick mimics that of a good lip balm. It’s also easy to apply.
Cons: It leans more towards a deep orange hue than a beautiful red. But after a few coats it tends to appear clumpy on the lips instead of creating an even finish.
Overall impression: This product leans more towards a pigmented lip balm than it does a lipstick.
Price: R49.95
