Pick n Pay has launched another collectable promotion, approximately a year after its apparently successful Stikeez promotion. The Super Animals campaign comes a few weeks after competitors Spar and Checkers also launched their own collectables promotions. Spar is in the throes of its Angry Birds promotion, while Checkers is running its Minis promotion. Pick n Pay’s Super Animals campaign is running from 11 July to 4 September, or when the Super Animals cards run out, whichever comes first.
The promotion
As with the Stikeez promotion last year, and the Spar and Checkers promotions currently on offer, Pick n Pay will reward customers for every R150 spent. There are 108 of the Super Animal cards to collect, and you get four Super Animals for every R150 spent. The cards are broken down into nine categories, these are:
The cards depicting the Big Five (African Elephant, African Buffalo, African Lion, African Leopard, and Black Rhinoceros) offer added features. When used with the Super Animals app, available on iPhone and Android devices, these cards are “infused with animation” through the apps’ Augmented Reality.
Releasing the animals
In addition to the cards, there are add-ons that are available to purchase at Pick n Pay. Each card has a barcode, this can be read by a Sound Card Reader, available at Pick n Pay for R50. When the card is swiped through the card reader, the sound on the animal depicted on the card is heard.
“Pick n Pay has also launched its own Super Animals app as a free download for Android and iPhones. The app is a Super Animals collecting companion which uses Augmented Reality to bring the cards to life. Use it to track your collection, learn fun facts and download achievements. The app will provide hours of fun and excitement to budding collectors and animal enthusiasts alike, with so much waiting to be discovered,” explained Pick n Pay.
Pick n Pay added: “As you scan your Super Animal collectible cards with the app, you can add the cards to your virtual collector’s album and unlock exciting activities and achievement badges. You can revisit already collected Super Animals to hear their calls or read their facts. The achievement badges unlock for various actions, such as unlocking one of the Big Five, or having all the animals in a specific category. When this happens, you can scan the category page with your device to see the animals in a fun and interactive scene. The dioramas are different for each category.”
There is also a Super Animals tin available for R15, as well as a collector’s album for R20. The album contains fun trivia and activities. For each album sold, Pick n Pay will donate R1 to support five partner environmental organisations: SANParks, the SPCA, Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, SANCCOB and the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
John Bradshaw, Pick n Pay customer and trade executive, noted: “By partnering with these organisations we hope to highlight the great work they do day in and day out to make sure that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the incredible natural beauty we have been given here in South Africa.”
Pick n Pay will be hosting special swap sessions during the campaign at Pick n Pay Hypers across the country. Keep an eye out in store for more information.
